Hacked Teamviwer serial key or number

I use teamviewer on a personal basis to access my home network when I am away and to access different computers on my home network when I am at home (saves the walk across the house).  I have different purposes for each computer and prefer to access the individual computer rather than try to duplicate or distribute tasks/apps/programs.  I generally leave a couple of computers running with teamviewer at all times such that I can access the data they contain.

This past August (), when I attempted to log into one of my remote computers I noticed the Teamviewer ID had changed which I found kind of strange.  Nevertheless I logged into the machine and continued.

About a week later I received and email addressed to me telling me my computer had been hacked via teamviewer and that the hacker had gained access to my email.  He informed me he had loaded a key logger on that computer as well as mirroring software and camera access such that he had a record of everything I had done as well as as video of me actually doing it.   I only use this computer to collect stock trading data so I was not too concerned however, he would have access to my whole network through this computer.  HIs message was somewhat credible as he knew my email address (not the one registered with Teamviewer), my teamviewer password and my facebook ID and password.  He then demanded ransome or he would distribute my personal information.

I immediately removed Teamviewer from the affected machine, re-installed the OS (Windows 7) installed new firewall and anti-virus software and have monitored the machine since.

I did not install teamviewer on the affected machine.  I installed two factor identfication on my other machines (sadly, I did not have it on any of my computers previously).

I still want to access the affected computer remotely but am extremely apprehensive about loading teamviewer again.  I am not sure how the hacker accessed my account in the first place (beyond randomly trying ID's).   I am guessing he is still monitoring the ID he was previously able to re-assign.

Could someone please explain how the previous hack occurred (If they are familiar with it) and how I can change the teamviewer ID on that computer such that the hacker will not have an easy place to restart his efforts?

TeamViewer includes encryption based on bit RSA private/public key exchange and Advanced Encryption Standard AES (bit) session encryption, two-factor authentication, enforced password reset on unusual activity and a listing feature for trusted devices (Whitelisting).^[27]

Remote service scams using TeamViewer[edit]

TeamViewer and similar services have been used to commit technical support scams via telephone calls. People are called, either at random or from a list, by criminals claiming to represent a computer support service that has identified the victim's computer as being infected by malware, most often using the name of companies such as Microsoft. They then ask the victim to give them access to their computer by installing a remote control service, which can allow the attacker to infect the computer with malware or to delete or copy personal files or to pretend to have removed malware for which they charge a fee. A Wired journalist investigating the scams was asked by a scammer to install TeamViewer.^[28][29] It was reported that ransomware programs were utilizing TeamViewer as a tool to obtain remote access to infected machines.^[30][31] In the United Kingdom, the Internet service providerTalkTalk blocked many remote access tools to protect its customers from remote service scams.^[32]

Account access misuse and possible breach[edit]

In June , hundreds of TeamViewer users reported having their computers accessed by an unauthorized address in China and bank accounts misappropriated.^[33] TeamViewer attributed the outcome to user's "careless password use" and denied all responsibility, saying "neither was TeamViewer hacked nor is there a security hole, TeamViewer is safe to use and has proper security measures in place. Our evidence points to careless use as the cause of the reported issue, a few extra steps will prevent potential abuse."^[34]

Following the reported misuse, TeamViewer went offline several hours due to a denial-of-service attack.^[35] The outage kept users from remotely logging into their computers. The company published a statement on its Web site summarizing the events and giving guidance in how users can protect themselves.^[36] TeamViewer referred to previous LinkedIn, Tumblr, and MySpace security breaches where millions of email and password pairs were hacked and the stolen login passwords were reused by the TeamViewer accounts of the victims. Teamviewer also claimed in the same statement that they do "not store any password-equivalent data".^[37]. Following this event, TeamViewer launched additional security measures, namely Trusted Devices and enforced TeamViewer account password reset, to improve the security.

Throughout the ordeal, TeamViewer has maintained that it is not at fault for the account thefts. The Germany-based company's handling of the matter has brought harsh criticism ^[38] from aggrieved customers, who accuse the company of being in "complete denial" of the problem.
