Pricing and Licensing
Based on extensive input from customers, partners and analysts related to the complexity of its current model, Microsoft has introduced a processor-based licensing model for the upcoming .NET Enterprise Server products. This new licensing model was designed for today’s e-business customers building business-to-business, business-to-consumer and business-to-employee web-based applications. Such hardware-based models have become standard in a web-based world where traditional measures of users or connecting devices are impossible to track.
SQL Server is included in this new licensing model, and also provides per-seat licensing for customers using SQL Server in non-Web based scenarios.
Processor License
Microsoft is implementing a processor-based licensing model to alleviate the current complexity and inconsistency. Under this new model, a customer acquires a Processor License for each processor running their server software. Processor licenses can be used in any internet, extranet, or intranet scenario.
A Processor License includes access for an unlimited number of users/devices to connect from either inside the corporate LAN or WAN or outside the firewall. Customers do not need to purchase additional Server Licenses, Client Access Licenses (CALs) or Internet Connector Licenses.
Processor Licenses will be available in both Enterprise and Standard Editions.
SQL Server Per-Seat Licensing
In addition to Processor Licenses, SQL Server will continue to offer separate Server Licenses (in both Standard and Enterprise Editions) and per-seat CALs to customers using SQL Server in non-Web-based scenarios, as it did with SQL Server and previous versions.
Server License - A server license (for either Standard or Enterprise edition) is required for every server on which that edition of SQL Server software is installed. The only exception is a Passive machine in an Active-Passive cluster.
Client Access License - A SQL Server Client Access License (CAL) is required in order for a device (e.g. a PC, workstation, terminal, PDA, mobile phone, etc.) to access or utilize the services or functionality of either edition of Microsoft SQL standardservices.com.pk only exception is communication exclusively between SQL Servers – that does not require CALs. A CAL is not software; it is a legal document granting a device access to server software.
The following illustrates a scenario requiring two SQL Server licenses and three CALs deployed in the Per Seat mode:

Multiplexing: Use of Middleware, Transaction Servers, and Multi-tiered architectures
