Feeble Spam Filtering

Spam protection is now built into the main product, not relegated to the add-on pack as it was last year. Other than that, it's little different from the previous version. It filters incoming POP3 e-mail and integrates with Outlook and Outlook Express (but not with Vista's Windows Mail). In supported mail clients, it automatically diverts spam to a Norton AntiSpam folder and adds a toolbar button for marking specific messages as spam or not spam. Those using other e-mail clients will simply create a spam folder and an appropriate message rule.

By default, the antispam whitelists any address currently in your address book, and a background task whitelists new additions unless you specifically exclude them. It also whitelists addresses to which you send mail and offers to whitelist the sender of any message you mark as not spam. Mail from whitelisted senders will never be blocked.

You can tweak the filter's sensitivity higher to catch more spam (and probably more valid mail as well) or lower to reduce the number of valid messages blocked (and let more spam through). I left it right in the middle for testing. AutoBlock, turned on by default, blocks all messages that have certain suspicious characteristics like invisible text or disguised Web links. You can even add your own rules to block messages that contain any specific phrase; I don't really see the point.

I measured how long it took to download 1, messages before installing Norton and after enabling the spam filter. The time required more than doubled, which is actually not as bad as some. Under BitDefender[link] the download took five times as long, and under F-Secure's[link] default settings it took 20 times as long.

I did run into a problem repeatedly. Upon hitting one of several specific messages a Norton process would crash, aborting the e-mail download. I couldn't reconnect until after reboot, and then the e-mail download started all over again. I solved this by turning off the e-mail antivirus protection. Symantec has had no other reports of this problem and is still working to find a more appropriate solution.

I let the product filter mail from three real-world accounts, discarding any messages over 60 days old. I manually sorted the Inbox into valid personal mail, valid bulk mail such as newsletters, undeniable spam, and everything else, deleting the last group. I did the same for the spam folder and analyzed the results.

What a dud! Like the version, it tossed more than a third of my valid personal mail into the spam folder, including messages from my wife, my colleagues, and my HMO. But where last year's version let just over 10 percent of spam into the Inbox, the current edition missed nearly 30 percent of undeniable spam. If your e-mail provider doesn't offer automatic spam filtering, don't rely on this feature for help. Leave it turned off and instead use , , or . These community-based filtering products block almost no valid mail and let through only 1 to 2 percent of the spam.—

I contacted the Customer Care and they helped me solved the issue.

Here are what should be done :

1. Restart the computer in Safe Mode with Networking:

- Reboot the computer;

- Press the F8 key repeatedly before Windows starts to load (you will need to

continue pressing the key repeatedly until a menu text appears);

- Select 'Safe mode with Networking' from the text menu and press 'Enter'

- Wait for Windows to load in Safe Mode, this process will end with a

confirmation message, click 'Yes' to confirm.

2. Download and run the uninstall tool:

run the uninstall tool in safe mode]

3. After the uninstall process finished , while still in Safe Mode, follow

these steps:

- If you use Windows Vista or Windows 7:

go to START, type in the search box type"regedit" - without quotes and press

Enter on the keyboard;

- If using Windows XP:

go to Start, select Run box type "regedit" - without quotes

and press Enter on the keyboard;

- Open the following key in the WindowsRegistry Editor :

HKEY_USERS \. DEFAULT \ Software \ SetID

- Right click the SetID folder and select Permissions

- Go to the Advanced

- Open the Owner tab

- Select current user from the list (computer name)

- Tick the option "Replace owner " and select Apply

- open the tab Auditing

- Tick "Replace Auditing Entries " and select Apply

- Open the Permissions tab

- Tick "Replace permission entries " and select Apply

- Afterwards open up the following Windows Registry Editor key:

HKEY_USERS \. DEFAULT \ Software \ SetID \ Internal

- Right click the Internal folder and select Permissions

- Go to the Advanced

- Open the Owner tab

- Select current user from the list (computer name)

- Tick "Replace owner " and select Apply

- Auditing tab open

- Tick "Replace Auditing Entries " and select Apply

- Open the Permissions tab

- Tick "Replace permission entries " and select Apply

Delete SetID and confirm the action.

4. After following all these steps, close the Registry Editor, restart

computer in normal mode and reinstall BitDefender using one of the following

installation kits:
